Introducing I-CIS

I-CIS is a fully compliant and efficient CIS service which we have launched to specifically help contractors who work within the Construction Industry. Contractors running through a CIS scheme take on a Self Employed Status and can enjoy the benefits of such a status.

Set out below is a summary of what we do for sub-contractors:

  • We will take care of all invoicing to client / agency.
  • We will take care of all CIS deductions and provide weekly/monthly statements. As we are self-billing, there is no need to send us invoices.
  • We will ensure payment into your bank account on the same day we received the funds from your agency or client.
  • We will cover sub-contractors with our comprehensive Insurance policy.
  • We will advise sub-contractors generally on the issues facing self employed individuals (e.g. NIC arrangements, how the CIS scheme and CIS deductions work etc).
  • We have gross CIS status which means we can receive payments gross, this ensures a straightforward and efficient process for you, your agency and your client.
  • Individuals that have been with us for a qualifying period will be able to take advantage of the free self-assessment returns service provided by our sister business PSG Accountancy.*
If this is starting to sound like the right service for you, you just need to consider the following
  • You must be registered with HMRC CIS Scheme and have a valid UTR number (we will check this via an automated online facility linked into our in-house software).
  • You must have the legal right to work in the UK on a self-employed basis.
  • Must genuinely be “in business on your own account” and must sign a Contract for Services.
  • You will need to make arrangements to pay your National Insurance contributions directly to HMRC.
  • You should always keep your receipts for your business expenses, as well as a business mileage log with fuel receipts and any other relevant paperwork. This will speed up and simplify the self-assessment process and allow you to claim tax relief on your expenses. We can guide you on expense compliance
Overleaf we have included some frequently asked questions and some useful phone numbers and websites. If you would like more information on how I-CIS could really add benefit to your contracting career, please call our dedicated I-CIS desk on 0151 443 6402 or main switchboard 0151 449 3500.

I-CIS FAQs

How do I register for CIS?
You can either register online via HMRC website www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/register-selfemp or register by telephone on the CIS Helpline on 0845 366 7899.

You will need a National Insurance number to register. If you do not have a National Insurance Number, you will need to contact the Department of Work & Pensions on 0845 6000 643 who will arrange an “Evidence of Identity Interview”.

Can I claim a deduction for my expenses as a CIS contractor?
Yes. As a self-employed contractor, you can claim business expenses through self-assessment at the end of the tax year (please note this is different to contractors running through umbrella services as they claim their expenses and get tax relief weekly). We can recommend PSG Accountancy LLP to help you get any tax back that you may be due.

Am I entitled to holiday pay or sick pay?
No. As a self-employed contractor providing a service, you are not defined as an employee, therefore you are not entitled to holiday pay or sick pay. However you will benefit from significantly lower NI costs.

How are my tax deductions calculated?
Tax deductions are defined by HMRC. 20% Deduction if you have a verified UTR number. 30% Deductions if no UTR number has been provided.

Do I pay national insurance contributions?
Yes. You will need to arrange your self-employed National Insurance contributions with H.M Revenue & Customs. You can call the Newly Self-employed helpline on 0845 915 4515 who will advise on the best method of payment for you.

If I have more than one assignment with another agency, what happens then?
We can process more than one timesheet for you in any one week. There would be a charge of £3.00 per additional timesheet.

Will I-PAYE CIS find work for me?
No. I-PAYE is not an employment business or employment agency and does not offer services for finding work.

Who do I call if I have any questions?
Call and speak to a member of our CIS team on 0151 449 3500 or e-mail them direct on cis@i-paye.com who will be more than happy to assist you with any queries that you may have.
